Why it’s time to embrace flexible working

A recent Timewise survey confirmed the importance of having a flexible working strategy in place, with 90 per cent of workers stating a dislike of the nine-to-five model, and 87 per cent revealing that they either already work flexibly or wish for the opportunity to do so. Flexible working is therefore key not just from an operations and productivity standpoint, but also to meet the rising demands of employees. We’ve outlined three areas to consider in order to ensure that such a strategy remains both productive and secure within your organisation:

Introduce the right collaboration tools
Off-site staff still need to connect with their teams, wherever they are. Fortunately, there is an impressive array of apps and websites available to address an assortment of collaboration needs. This includes tools like Cisco Spark, created to enhance communications through team messaging, online meetings and white boarding. There are also options such as Trello, for project management; Dropbox, for the storage and transfer of files; Cobot, which helps manage dedicated coworking spaces for remote or freelance workers; as well as the broad and immensely popular suite of offerings from Microsoft and Google.

Devices designed for professionals
As well as meeting the demand for employees to work flexibly, organisations must also then equip them with the physical technology to ensure they can continue to perform their job in a productive and secure manner. Devices which ensure optimum connectivity, power and portability, such as Toshiba’s Portégé X30, are built for mobile workers and as such enable them to work to the best of their ability, regardless of location.

Security inside and outside the ‘office’
When away from a team or dedicated workspace, it is also crucial to maintain best practice in protecting the integrity of – and information within – work documents. This is even more important when considering today’s increased security risks and compliance issues. Both the physical theft of devices and cyber theft of sensitive data are key concerns, of which flexible workers should be constantly aware. At an employee level, strong passwords and biometric tools are important. From an organisational perspective, broader clientless solutions can nullify most threats by removing data from mobile devices, instead storing it centrally for more secure management and access control.
